The weakness was released 02/05/2015 by Maksymillian Motyl with Google as Stable Channel Update, February 2015 as confirmed release notes (Website). The advisory is shared at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1212 since 01/21/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81870 (openSUSE Security Update : chromium (openSUSE-2015-228)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195998 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Oxide-qt Vulnerabilities (USN-2495-1)).
Upgrading to version 40.0.2214.111 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The release notes contains the following remark:
