bdf/bdflib.c in FreeType before 2.5.4 identifies property names by only verifying that an initial substring is present, which allows remote attackers to discover heap pointer values and bypass the ASLR protection mechanism via a crafted BDF font.

The weakness was disclosed 12/06/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk (j00ru) with Google as FreeType 2.5.4 as confirmed news (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at freetype.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-9675 since 02/07/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82509 (Amazon Linux AMI : freetype (ALAS-2015-502)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350200 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for freetype: ALAS-2015-502).

Upgrading to version 2.5.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at sourceforge.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The news contains the following remark:

FreeType 2.5.4 has been released. All users should upgrade due to another fix for vulnerability CVE-2014-2240 in the CFF driver. The library also contains a new round of patches for better protection against malformed fonts.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100821) and Tenable (82509). The entries 69067, 69068, 69069 and 69070 are pretty similar.
