The weakness was released 02/05/2015 by Moritz Muehlenhoff as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-9652 since 02/05/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81691 (openSUSE Security Update : php5 (openSUSE-2015-203)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
