A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen 4.5.0 on ARM (Virtualization Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Register Handler. The manipulation of the argument GICD.SGIR
with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability.
The weakness was disclosed 02/12/2015 by Julien Grall as XSA-117 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-0268 since 11/18/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:
When decoding a guest write to a specific register in the virtual interrupt controller Xen would treat an invalid value as a critical error and crash the host.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84704 (FreeBSD : xen-kernel -- arm: vgic-v2: GICD_SGIR is not properly emulated (785c86b1-27d6-11e5-a4a5-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.
Applying the patch xsa117.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100868) and Tenable (84704).
