Linux Foundation Xen 4.5.0 on ARM Register GICD.SGIR input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen 4.5.0 on ARM (Virtualization Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Register Handler. The manipulation of the argument GICD.SGIR with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The weakness was disclosed 02/12/2015 by Julien Grall as XSA-117 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-0268 since 11/18/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:

When decoding a guest write to a specific register in the virtual interrupt controller Xen would treat an invalid value as a critical error and crash the host.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84704 (FreeBSD : xen-kernel -- arm: vgic-v2: GICD_SGIR is not properly emulated (785c86b1-27d6-11e5-a4a5-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Applying the patch xsa117.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100868) and Tenable (84704).
