Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site, aka "CTreeNode Use After Free Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 11/13/2012 by Tal Zeltzer with iDEFENSE Labs as MS12-072 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4775 since 09/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62903 (MS12-071: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2761451)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100124 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-071)).

Applying the patch KB2727528 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12649.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (79687) and Tenable (62903). The entries 6919, 6920, 6921 and 6923 are pretty similar.
