Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.5.1 does not properly consider trust levels during construction of output data, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information via (1) a crafted XAML browser application (aka XBAP) or (2) a crafted .NET Framework application, aka "Code Access Security Info Disclosure Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 11/13/2012 by James Forshaw with Context Information Security as MS12-074 as confirmed bulletin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1896 since 03/22/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62906 (MS12-074: Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2745030)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90841 (Microsoft .NET Framework Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-074)).
Applying the patch KB2745030 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
