Condor up to 7.6.4 Service format string

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The product uses a function that accepts a format string as an argument, but the format string originates from an external source. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple format string vulnerabilities in Condor 7.2.0 through 7.6.4, and possibly certain 7.7.x versions, as used in Red Hat MRG Grid and possibly other products, allow local users to cause a denial of service (condor_schedd daemon and failure to launch jobs) and possibly execute arbitrary code via format string specifiers in (1) the reason for a hold for a job that uses an XML user log, (2) the filename of a file to be transferred, and possibly other unspecified vectors.

The weakness was published 02/10/2014 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at htcondor-git.cs.wisc.edu. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-4930 since 12/23/2011. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76637 (RHEL 6 : MRG (RHSA-2012:0099)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at htcondor-git.cs.wisc.edu.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73017) and Tenable (76637).
