The OpenUrlToBufferTimeout method in the BWOCXRUN.BwocxrunCtrl.1 ActiveX control in bwocxrun.ocx in Advantech WebAccess before 7.2 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a file: URL.

The weakness was disclosed 04/12/2014 by Andrea Micalizzi with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at ics-cert.us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0772 since 01/02/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122001 (Advantech WebAccess Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13462.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (92571). The entries 69323, 69321, 69320 and 69319 are pretty similar.
