The bzexe command in bzip2 1.0.5 and earlier generates compressed executables that do not properly handle temporary files during extraction, which allows local users to execute arbitrary code by precreating a temporary directory.
The weakness was released 04/16/2014 by vladz (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-4089 since 10/18/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by vladz in ANSI C and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 22 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57315 (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS / 10.04 LTS / 10.10 / 11.04 / 11.10 : bzip2 vulnerability (USN-1308-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195170 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Bzip2 Vulnerability (USN-1308-1)).
