IBM Java up to 7.0 Sandbox invoke memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The software performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was disclosed 11/13/2012 by Adam Gowdiak with Security Explorations as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-4820 since 09/06/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63281 (IBM Lotus Notes 8.5.1 / 8.5.2 / 8.5.3 < 8.5.3 FP3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121159 (IBM Java SDK Multiple Vulnerabilities (IBM Security Update November 2012)).

Upgrading to version 7 SR3, 6.0.1 SR4, 6 SR12, 5 SR15, eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21616617 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13090.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (78764), Vulnerability Center (SBV-37514) and Tenable (63281). The entries 6941, 6943, 6944 and 7191 are pretty similar.
