The Poco::Net::X509Certificate::verify method in the NetSSL library in POCO C++ Libraries before 1.4.6p4 allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof SSL servers via crafted DNS PTR records that are requested during comparison of a server name to a wildcard domain name in an X.509 certificate.
The weakness was released 04/25/2014 by Alexander as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0350 since 12/05/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 89474 (Fedora 22 : poco-1.4.2p1-3.fc22 (2016-0b3a611401)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. Upgrading to version 1.4.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
