The ParseRoster component in the Ignite Realtime Smack XMPP API before 4.0.0-rc1 does not verify the from attribute of a roster-query IQ stanza, which allows remote attackers to spoof IQ responses via a crafted attribute.

The weakness was presented 04/30/2014 by Thijs Alkemade as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0364 since 12/05/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80448 (Fedora 21 : smack-4.0.6-1.fc21 (2015-0046)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123149 (Fedora Security Update for smack (FEDORA-2015-0046)).

Upgrading to version 3.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
