Digia Qt prior 4.6.0 GIF Decoder null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Digia Qt. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component GIF Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The GIF decoder in QtGui in Qt before 5.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) via invalid width and height values in a GIF image.

The weakness was presented 05/08/2014 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.kde.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-0190 since 12/03/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74002 (Fedora 19 : mingw-qt-4.8.6-1.fc19 (2014-6028)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196129 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Qt4-x11, Qtbase-opensource-src Vulnerabilities (USN-2626-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92953), Tenable (74002), SecurityFocus (BID 67087†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44522†).
