The Java Network Launching Protocol (JNLP) implementation in IcedTea6 1.9.x before 1.9.9 and before 1.8.9, and IcedTea-Web 1.1.x before 1.1.1 and before 1.0.4, allows remote attackers to trick victims into granting access to local files by modifying the content of the Java Web Start Security Warning dialog box to represent a different filename than the file for which access will be granted.

The weakness was disclosed 05/13/2014 by Omair (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-2514. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55663 (Fedora 15 : icedtea-web-1.0.4-1.fc15 (2011-9541)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155723 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for IcedTea-Web (ELSA-2011-1100)).

Upgrading to version 1.8.8 eliminates this vulnerability.
