A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 16.0.1/16.0.2 (Web Browser). It has been classified as problematic. This affects some unknown functionality of the component XMLHttpRequest Sandbox. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a security check vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-358. The product does not implement or incorrectly implements one or more security-relevant checks as specified by the design of a standardized algorithm, protocol, or technique. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Mozilla Firefox before 17.0, Thunderbird before 17.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.14 assign the system principal, rather than the sandbox principal, to XMLHttpRequest objects created in sandboxes, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site request forgery (CSRF) attacks or obtain sensitive information by leveraging a sandboxed add-on.
The weakness was released 11/20/2012 by Gabor Krizsanits (moz_bug_r_a4) with Mozilla Corporation as MFSA 2012-97 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with Mozilla. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-4205 since 08/08/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1211 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62979 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (d23119df-335d-11e2-b64c-c8600054b392)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165846 (SUSE Security Update to Firefox 17.0 and other Mozilla (openSUSE-SU-2013:0175-1)).
Upgrading to version 17.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80175) and Tenable (62979). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 6971, 6972, 6973 and 6975.
