Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird 16.0.1/16.0.2 Image Dimension copyTexImage2D numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 16.0.1/16.0.2 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function copyTexImage2D of the component Image Dimension Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The copyTexImage2D implementation in the WebGL subsystem in Mozilla Firefox before 17.0, Thunderbird before 17.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.14 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via large image dimensions.

The weakness was shared 11/20/2012 by Peter Van der Beken (miaubiz) as MFSA 2012-106 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5838 since 11/05/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62979 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (d23119df-335d-11e2-b64c-c8600054b392)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165721 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SU-2012:1592-1)).

Upgrading to version 17.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80186) and Tenable (62979). bugzilla.mozilla.org is providing further details. The entries 6971, 6972, 6973 and 6975 are related to this item.
