lighttpd 1.4.31/1.4.32 src/request.c http_request_split_value resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The http_request_split_value function in request.c in lighttpd before 1.4.32 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop) via a request with a header containing an empty token, as demonstrated using the "Connection: TE,,Keep-Alive" header.

The weakness was presented 11/21/2012 by Jesse Sipprell with McClatchy Interactive, Inc. as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at download.lighttpd.net. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5533 since 10/24/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by t4c and been published 1 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74819 (openSUSE Security Update : lighttpd (openSUSE-SU-2012:1532-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.4.32 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at lighttpd.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12788.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80213), Tenable (74819) and Exploit-DB (22902).
