Microsoft Windows up to Vista memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft Windows up to Vista (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, and Windows RT Gold and 8.1 do not properly handle use of the paged kernel pool for allocation of uninitialized memory, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information about kernel addresses via a crafted application, aka "Windows Kernel Pool Allocation Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 08/12/2014 by Ilja van Sprundel as MS14-045 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-4064 since 06/12/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77163 (MS14-045: Vulnerabilities in Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2984615)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90972 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS14-045)).

Applying the patch MS14-045 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95005) and Tenable (77163). The entries 67356, 67357, 67358 and 70606 are pretty similar.
