Apache Subversion up to 1.6.17 certificate validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apache Subversion up to 1.6.17 (Versioning Software). This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a certificate validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-297. The product communicates with a host that provides a certificate, but the product does not properly ensure that the certificate is actually associated with that host. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The (1) serf_ssl_cert_issuer, (2) serf_ssl_cert_subject, and (3) serf_ssl_cert_certificate functions in Serf 0.2.0 through 1.3.x before 1.3.7 does not properly handle a NUL byte in a domain name in the subject s Common Name (CN) field of an X.509 certificate, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof arbitrary SSL servers via a crafted certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority.

The weakness was shared 08/19/2014 by Ben Reser (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at subversion.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3504 since 05/14/2014. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/28/2022). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1587.003 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77124 (FreeBSD : serf -- SSL Certificate Null Byte Poisoning (69048656-2187-11e4-802c-20cf30e32f6d)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167137 (OpenSuSE Security Update for libserf, subversion (openSUSE-SU-2014:1059-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (77124), SecurityFocus (BID 69238†), Secunia (SA60721†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45884†). The entry VDB-70660 is related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
