. The manipulation of the argument path
with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory traversal vulnerability in the file_get_contents function in downloadfiles/download.php in the WP Content Source Control (wp-source-control) plugin 3.0.0 and earlier for WordPress allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) in the path parameter.
The weakness was released 08/22/2014 by Henri Salo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-5368 since 08/20/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77373 (WP Source Control Plugin for WordPress Directory Traversal), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13020 (WordPress WP Content Source Control Plugin "download.php" Directory Traversal Vulnerability).
