Apache Axis up to 1.4 getCN certificate validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apache Axis up to 1.4. This affects the function getCN. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a certificate validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-297. The product communicates with a host that provides a certificate, but the product does not properly ensure that the certificate is actually associated with that host. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The getCN function in Apache Axis 1.4 and earlier does not properly verify that the server hostname matches a domain name in the subject s Common Name (CN) or subjectAltName field of the X.509 certificate, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof SSL servers via a certificate with a subject that specifies a common name in a field that is not the CN field. NOTE: this issue exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2012-5784.

The weakness was shared 08/26/2014 by Arun Neelicattu with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared at issues.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3596 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/28/2022). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1587.003 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77692 (CentOS 5 / 6 : axis (CESA-2014:1193)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172421 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for axis (SUSE-SU-2019:1382-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (95377) and Tenable (77692). The entries 62831 and 100017 are related to this item.
