The bug was discovered 12/11/2012. The weakness was disclosed 12/12/2012 by SecuriTeam with SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure as MS12-079 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-2539 since 05/09/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63226 (MS12-079: Vulnerability in Microsoft Word Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2780642)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. This issue was added on 03/28/2022 to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a due date of 04/18/2022:

Apply updates per vendor instructions.

Applying the patch MS12-079 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12683.
