The kernel in Samsung Galaxy S2, Galaxy Note 2, MEIZU MX, and possibly other Android devices, when running an Exynos 4210 or 4412 processor, uses weak permissions (0666) for /dev/exynos-mem, which allows attackers to read or write arbitrary physical memory and gain privileges via a crafted application, as demonstrated by ExynosAbuse.
The weakness was published 12/15/2012 by alephzain as confirmed posting (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at forum.xda-developers.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-6422 since 12/17/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Chainfire and been published 2 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at forum.xda-developers.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more.
Upgrading to version 2013-01-16 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch exploit fix is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at forum.xda-developers.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Apple iPhone as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
