Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.4.1 x86_emulate access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function x86_emulate. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The x86_emulate function in arch/x86/x86_emulate/x86_emulate.c in Xen 3.3.x through 4.4.x does not check the supervisor mode permissions for instructions that generate software interrupts, which allows local HVM guest users to cause a denial of service (guest crash) via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was released 10/02/2014 by Andrei Lutas as XSA-106 as confirmed security advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xenbits.xen.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-7156 since 09/24/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to approached within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78027 (Debian DSA-3041-1 : xen - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370032 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX200218)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (96147) and Tenable (78027). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 67681, 67682, 67719 and 71770.
