FreePBX up to 2.11.1.4 unserialize code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

htdocs_ari/includes/login.php in the ARI Framework module/Asterisk Recording Interface (ARI) in FreePBX before 2.9.0.9, 2.10.x, and 2.11 before 2.11.1.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via the ari_auth coockie, related to the PHP unserialize function, as exploited in the wild in September 2014.

The weakness was published 10/07/2014 (Website). The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-7235 since 09/30/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by inj3ctor3 and been published 3 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81182 (FreePBX /recordings/index.php 'ari_auth' Cookie Authentication Bypass), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

Upgrading to version 2.11.1.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 17180.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (96790), Tenable (81182) and Exploit-DB (41005).
