The processutils.execute function in OpenStack oslo-incubator, Cinder, Nova, and Trove before 2013.2.4 and 2014.1 before 2014.1.3 allows local users to obtain passwords from commands that cause a ProcessExecutionError by reading the log.

The weakness was presented 10/08/2014 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.launchpad.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-7230 since 09/29/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79211 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS : cinder vulnerabilities (USN-2405-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195667 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Cinder Vulnerabilities (USN-2405-1)).

Upgrading to version 2014.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
