GNU grep up to 2.10 Argument Long Input numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in GNU grep up to 2.10. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block of the component Argument Handler. The manipulation with the input value perl -e 'print "x"x(2**31)' leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple integer overflows in GNU Grep before 2.11 might allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving a long input line that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.

The weakness was published 12/17/2012 by Joshua Rogers as grep <2.11 is vulnerable to "Arbitrary command execution" as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.launchpad.net. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-5667 since 10/24/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Joshua Rogers in Shell-Skript and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at bugs.launchpad.net. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73220 (GLSA-201403-07 : grep: User-assisted execution of arbitrary code), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350104 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for grep: ALAS-2015-598).

Upgrading to version 2.11 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.sv.gnu.org. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80811), Tenable (73220) and Exploit-DB (23779). Further details are available at savannah.gnu.org.
