GnuPG up to 2.0.19 Key Processing pubring.gpg read_block Malformed Key input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in GnuPG and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function read_block of the file pubring.gpg of the component Key Processing. The manipulation as part of a Malformed Key leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The read_block function in g10/import.c in GnuPG 1.4.x before 1.4.13 and 2.0.x through 2.0.19, when importing a key, allows remote attackers to corrupt the public keyring database or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted length field of an OpenPGP packet.

The weakness was published 12/28/2012 by KB Sriram as GnuPG 1.4.12 and lower - memory access errors and keyring database corruption as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-6085 since 12/06/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70601 (RHEL 5 : gnupg (RHSA-2013:1458)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 390142 (Oracle VM Server for x86 Security Update for gnupg2 (OVMSA-2018-0239)).

Upgrading to version 1.4.13 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at gnupg.org. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with PGP as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (80990) and Tenable (70601). Additional details are provided at seclists.org. Similar entries are available at 7239 and 10308.
