FFMpeg up to 2.3.2 Array Access memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

libavcodec/iff.c in FFMpeg before 1.1.14, 1.2.x before 1.2.8, 2.2.x before 2.2.7, and 2.3.x before 2.3.2 allows remote attackers to have unspecified impact via a crafted iff image, which triggers an out-of-bounds array access, related to the rgb8 and rgbn formats.

The issue has been introduced in 01/06/2013. The weakness was published 11/03/2014 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.videolan.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-5272 since 08/15/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 666 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82449 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : ffmpeg (MDVSA-2015:173)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 1.1.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
