Use-after-free vulnerability in the ~nsHTMLEditRules implementation in Mozilla Firefox before 18.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.12 and 17.x before 17.0.1, Thunderbird before 17.0.2, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.12 and 17.x before 17.0.1, and SeaMonkey before 2.15 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was shared 01/08/2013 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as MFSA 2013-02 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-0766 since 01/02/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63431 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox / xulrunner (CESA-2013:0144)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120795 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:0144)).

Upgrading to version 18.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
