A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird up to 17.0 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component SVG Elements Plugin Objects Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Mozilla Firefox before 18.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.12 and 17.x before 17.0.2, Thunderbird before 17.0.2, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.12 and 17.x before 17.0.2, and SeaMonkey before 2.15 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code with chrome privileges by leveraging improper interaction between plugin objects and SVG elements.
The weakness was presented 01/08/2013 by Mariusz Mlynski (regenrecht) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MFSA 2013-15 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0758 since 01/02/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63431 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox / xulrunner (CESA-2013:0144)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120795 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:0144)).
Upgrading to version 18.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81800), Exploit-DB (41683), Tenable (63431), SecurityFocus (BID 57185†) and OSVDB (89020†). See VDB-7280, VDB-7281, VDB-7282 and VDB-7283 for similar entries.
