Debian Hivex up to 1.3.x Privileges lib/handle.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Debian Hivex up to 1.3.x and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block in the library lib/handle.c of the component Privileges. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The software performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

lib/handle.c in Hivex before 1.3.11 allows local users to execute arbitrary code and gain privileges via a small hive files, which triggers an out-of-bounds read or write.

The weakness was presented 12/08/2014 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-9273 since 12/04/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82006 (GLSA-201503-07 : hivex: User-assisted execution of arbitrary code), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.3.10-2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99725) and Tenable (82006).
