FFMpeg up to 2.4.1 decode_ihdr_chunk memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in FFMpeg up to 2.4.1 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function decode_ihdr_chunk. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The decode_ihdr_chunk function in libavcodec/pngdec.c in FFMpeg before 2.1.6, 2.2.x through 2.3.x, and 2.4.x before 2.4.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds heap access) and possibly have other unspecified impact via an IDAT before an IHDR in a PNG file.

The weakness was released 12/09/2014 (Website). The advisory is available at ffmpeg.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-9317 since 12/07/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83939 (FreeBSD : avidemux26 -- multiple vulnerabilities in bundled FFmpeg (022255be-0895-11e5-a242-5404a68ad561)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176784 (Debian Security Update for libav (DLA 1611-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (83939). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 68532, 68533, 68975 and 72779.
