XFree86/X11 prior 6.1 DBE Extension SProcDbeSwapBuffers memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in XFree86 and X11 (Windowing System Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function SProcDbeSwapBuffers of the component DBE Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The DBE extension in X.Org X Window System (aka X11 or X) X11R6.1 and X.Org Server (aka xserver and xorg-server) before 1.16.3 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read or write) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted length or index value to the (1) ProcDbeSwapBuffers or (2) SProcDbeSwapBuffers function.

The weakness was presented 12/10/2014 by Ilja van Sprundel (Website). The advisory is available at x.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-8097 since 10/10/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80557 (Amazon Linux AMI : xorg-x11-server (ALAS-2015-470)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350232 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for xorg-x11-server: ALAS-2015-470).

Upgrading to version 6.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99223) and Tenable (80557). See 68379, 68380, 73184 and 73183 for similar entries.
