iPass Open Mobile up to 2.4.4 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in iPass Open Mobile up to 2.4.4 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The client in iPass Open Mobile before 2.4.5 on Windows allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a DLL pathname in a crafted Unicode string that is improperly handled by a subprocess reached through a named pipe, as demonstrated by a UNC share pathname.

The weakness was released 01/22/2015 by Matthias Kaiser as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-0925 since 01/10/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124617 (iPass Open Mobile Windows Client Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (100411), Exploit-DB (36412), SecurityFocus (BID 72265†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57804†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
