Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in includes/startup.php in phpBB before 3.0.13 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via vectors related to "Relative Path Overwrite."
The weakness was presented 02/10/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wiki.phpbb.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-1431 since 01/31/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13120 (phpBB Cross-Site Scripting and Cross-Site Request Forgery Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.0.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
