A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in MantisBT up to 1.2.12 (Bug Tracking Software). This issue affects the function string_sanitize_url
of the file core/string_api.php of the component Regular Expression. The manipulation of the argument return
with an unknown input leads to a redirect vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-601. A web application accepts a user-controlled input that specifies a link to an external site, and uses that link in a Redirect. This simplifies phishing attacks. The string_sanitize_url function in core/string_api.php in MantisBT 1.2.0a3 through 1.2.18 uses an incorrect regular expression, which allows remote attackers to conduct open redirect and phishing attacks via a URL with a ":/" (colon slash) separator in the return parameter to login_page.php, a different vulnerability than CVE-2014-6316.
The weakness was presented 02/10/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared at mantisbt.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-1042 since 01/11/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction.
