Mindrot Jbcrypt up to 0.2 Flow integer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mindrot Jbcrypt up to 0.2. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Flow. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Integer overflow in the crypt_raw method in the key-stretching implementation in jBCrypt before 0.4 makes it easier for remote attackers to determine cleartext values of password hashes via a brute-force attack against hashes associated with the maximum exponent.

The weakness was published 02/27/2015 by gets as Bug 2097 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mindrot.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-0886 since 01/08/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81845 (Fedora 20 : jBCrypt-0.4-1.fc20 (2015-2994)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11990 (Jenkins Multiple Security Vulnerabilities (Security Advisory 2017-02-01)).

Upgrading to version 0.3 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (81845). Similar entries are available at 63705, 90735, 103642 and 116083.
