Apache HTTP Server up to 2.4.12 mod_lua lua_request.c wsupgrade input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Apache HTTP Server up to 2.4.12 (Web Server). This affects the function wsupgrade of the file lua_request.c of the component mod_lua. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The lua_websocket_read function in lua_request.c in the mod_lua module in the Apache HTTP Server through 2.4.12 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (child-process crash) by sending a crafted WebSocket Ping frame after a Lua script has called the wsupgrade function.

The weakness was disclosed 03/07/2015 (GitHub Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-0228 since 11/18/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/01/2022).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 81622 (openSUSE Security Update : apache2 (openSUSE-2015-191)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350123 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for httpd24: ALAS-2015-579).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (81622), SecurityFocus (BID 73041†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52618†). The entry VDB-89921 is pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
