The utils.http.is_safe_url function in Django before 1.4.20, 1.5.x, 1.6.x before 1.6.11, 1.7.x before 1.7.7, and 1.8.x before 1.8c1 does not properly validate URLs, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via a control character in a URL, as demonstrated by a \x08javascript: URL.

The weakness was released 03/25/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared at djangoproject.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-2317 since 03/17/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168079 (OpenSuSE Security Update for python-django (openSUSE-SU-2015:1598-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.6.9 eliminates this vulnerability.
