Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2 IOHIDFamily memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple MacOS X up to 10.10.2 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component IOHIDFamily. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in IOHIDFamily in Apple iOS before 8 and Apple TV before 7 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in a privileged context via an application that provides crafted key-mapping properties.

The weakness was published 04/08/2015 by Ian Beer (evad3rs) with Google Project Zero as HT204659 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-4404 since 06/20/2014. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:

A malicious application may be able to execute arbitrary code with system privileges

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77822 (Apple TV < 7 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 02/10/2022 with a due date of 08/10/2022:

Apply updates per vendor instructions.

Upgrading to version 10.10.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (96111), Tenable (77822) and Exploit-DB (35440). Similar entries are available at 67368, 67370, 67371 and 67372.
