Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Html class in MediaWiki before 1.19.24, 1.2x before 1.23.9, and 1.24.x before 1.24.2 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a LanguageConverter substitution string when using a language variant.

The weakness was published 03/31/2015 by Bawolff with iSEC Partners (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-2933 since 04/07/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82686 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : mediawiki (MDVSA-2015:200)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13127 (Mediawiki Multiple Vulnerabilities (MediaWiki Security Release: 1.19.24, 1.23.9 and 1.24.2)).

Upgrading to version 1.19.24, 1.23.9 or 1.24.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
