The issue has been introduced in 01/30/2007. The weakness was published 04/14/2015 with Zero Day Initiative as MS15-033 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1650 since 02/17/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2996 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82769 (MS15-033: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3048019)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110252 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS15-033)).

Applying the patch MS15-033 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19704.
