A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in PHP 5.6 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is the function unserialize
of the component phar File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality.
The weakness was presented 04/16/2015 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-2783 since 03/29/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84025 (Debian DSA-3280-1 : php5 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 10005 (PHP Prior to 5.6.8/5.5.24/5.4.40 Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.php.net.
