A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat JBoss Enterprise up to 5.1.9 (Application Server Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component JMXInvokerHAServlet/EJBInvokerHAServlet/EJBInvokerHAServlet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The (1) JMXInvokerHAServlet and (2) EJBInvokerHAServlet invoker servlets in JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP) 5.2.0, Web Platform (EWP) 5.2.0, and BRMS Platform before 5.3.1 do not require authentication by default in certain profiles, which might allow remote attackers to invoke MBean methods and execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors. NOTE: this issue can only be exploited when the interceptor is not properly configured with a "second layer of authentication," or when used in conjunction with other vulnerabilities that bypass this second layer.
The weakness was released 01/24/2013 by David Jorm (vlet) with Red Hat Security Response Team as Bug#795645 as confirmed bug report (Website). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The public release was coordinated with Red Hat. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0874 since 01/19/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by rgod and been published 12 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70414 (Apache Tomcat / JBoss EJBInvokerServlet / JMXInvokerServlet Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12483 (Red Hat JBoss EJBInvokerServlet is Accessible to Unauthenticated Remote Users).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 26765.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81511), Tenable (70414) and Exploit-DB (30211). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 7468, 7469, 7499 and 7500.
