Oracle MySQL up to 5.7.2 SSL Client --ssl access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Oracle MySQL up to 5.7.2 (Database Software). This affects an unknown function of the component SSL Client. The manipulation of the argument --ssl with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The advisory summarizes:

The vulnerability also affects the MySQL forks MariaDB and Percona Server, as the relevant 5.7.3 patch has not been pulled, at the time of this advisory, in their respective stable versions.

The weakness was shared 04/29/2015 by Adam Goodman with Duo Security as #2015-003 as confirmed advisory (oCERT). It is possible to read the advisory at ocert.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-3152 since 04/10/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

A vulnerability has been reported concerning the impossibility for MySQL users (with any major stable version) to enforce an effective SSL/TLS connection that would be immune from man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks performing a malicious downgrade.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83347 (MySQL 5.1.x < 5.7.3 SSL/TLS Downgrade MitM (BACKRONYM)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175452 (Debian Security Update for mariadb-10.0 (DSA 3311-1)).

Upgrading to version 5.7.3 Preview Release eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (102740) and Tenable (83347). The entries 74948, 74950, 74956 and 74959 are related to this item.
