The weakness was disclosed 04/29/2015 by Sebastian Andrzej Siewior as ClamAV 0.98.7 has been released! as confirmed release notes (Blog). It is possible to read the advisory at blog.clamav.net. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Clam. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-2222 since 03/05/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83976 (Amazon Linux AMI : clamav (ALAS-2015-537)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350165 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for clamav: ALAS-2015-537).

Upgrading to version 0.98.7 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at clamav.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
