The upx decoder in ClamAV before 0.98.7 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted file.

The weakness was shared 04/29/2015 by Sebastian Andrzej Siewior as ClamAV 0.98.7 has been released! as confirmed release notes (Blog). The advisory is shared at blog.clamav.net. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-2170 since 03/01/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83255 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS / 14.10 / 15.04 : clamav vulnerabilities (USN-2594-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350165 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for clamav: ALAS-2015-537).

Upgrading to version 0.98.7 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at clamav.net. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19891.
