A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 4.0.3 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function ping_unhash
of the file net/ipv4/ping.c of the component Ping Socket. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was published 05/02/2015 by Wen Xu and wushi with KeenTeam as Bug 1218074 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-3636 since 05/02/2015. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83339 (Fedora 22 : kernel-4.0.2-300.fc22 (2015-7784)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350179 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2015-523).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com.
