Qt up to 4.8.6/5.4.1 QtBase Module ICO Image memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple buffer overflows in the QtBase module in Qt before 4.8.7 and 5.x before 5.4.2 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted ICO image.

The weakness was published 05/12/2015 by Richard Moore (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.qt-project.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1859 since 02/17/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83164 (Debian DLA-210-1 : qt4-x11 security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196129 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Qt4-x11, Qtbase-opensource-src Vulnerabilities (USN-2626-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.8.7 or 5.4.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (83164). Similar entries are available at 69623, 74479, 75234 and 75236.
